California Part 6: Questioning Perspective in Berkeley

What are you noticing in your life? What are you focusing on?

Travel can be a great mirror for what we value. When I return from travels, I look back on the photos I took. What did I see? What did I stop to notice? What did I value?

As you’ll see from my travels to Berkeley, I took a lot of photos of flowers, art, and architecture. The sky is pretty gray for most of the day, which causes color to pop when you see it. The contrast of the gray sky made me appreciate color so much more.

This makes me question how I live my life when I’m not traveling. I realized that in my day-to-day life I rarely stop to notice, or take photos, of things I see. I realized that there are so many ways to incorporate adventure and inspiration into our daily lives. It doesn’t just need to be when we’re traveling.

So why don’t we?

What would our lives look like if we allowed ourselves to see it, and act on it, like travel or adventure?

Execution is the Game

As writers, and creators, it’s easy to let perfectionism and the fear of people’s opinions (FOPO) get in the way of putting our work in the world.

I’m guilty of this. And, I’m sure you are too.

In February 2018, I had the pleasure of seeing Gary Vaynerchuck live at the Tampa Theatre. His live talk was identical to seeing him on social media — except you get to see how funny, candid, and generous he really is.

I can’t remember the first time I listened to Gary Vee, but I will say I was put off. I gave him a second chance and listened to what he was saying. Basically, his desire is for all of us to stop complaining about our lives and go all into whatever it is that we’re passionate about. He wants to help us all avoid regret at the end of our lives. I dig it.

That leads me to a Gary Vee quote that rings in my ears these days:

“Ideas are shit, execution is the game.”

And, so I find myself being more honest with myself. Writing more. Putting work in the world. Trying. Failing. Trying again.

Because ideas come and go, but the most important is to execute on what’s bursting to come out.

 

Journaling Prompts for When You’re Feeling Lost or Stuck

Hands down my daily journaling ritual has changed my life. It’s given me a much clearer perspective on my internal world and what impact I want to leave in the world around me. I’m now a journaling evangelist (is this a thing?) but really, I recommend journaling to everyone.

If I could leave my reputation and anything else behind, what would I do, and how would that change things for me?

Think of your 87 year old-self, what would they say to you today? What would make them feel like you lived a full life?

If there were no limits, what would I love to become involved in?

How am I holding myself back and what small action can I take today?

What can I do more of in my life that I have been missing?

Who do I admire and why do I admire them?

Where would I love to see myself in 3 years time? (describe your ideal day i.e. where you live, what you’re doing, what lights you up, who you’re with, etc.)

 

SLOW DOWN: Life is happening NOW

We get so carried away in life by rushing to our destination.

Rushing to college.

Rushing to the job.

Rushing to the mate.

Rushing, rushing, rushing.

This rushing causes an immense about of distress internally. It splits our energy.  It makes us feel like we are wrong now. Like we are broken now. Like we are incomplete.

But of course, you are not incomplete. You are exactly where you need to be experiencing what you need to be experiencing. Does that mean that you become  complacent? Not at all. You can strive for better while enjoying and savoring the present moment.

I was scrolling through my phone the other day and noticed that I take a lot of random photos of things (anyone else do this?!). It reminded me of how much we can miss in life when we are rushing through. It reminded me of how much beauty is here and now.

That life is perfect as it is now.

Not tomorrow. Not when you get the perfect job. Or the perfect client. Or the perfect mate.

Life is beautiful right here and now.

 

Working with Owls: Balancing Being and Doing

You might remember my trip to The Owl Cafe Asakusa in Japan this time last year, or my love for owls.

January 2017, I began volunteering in the Birds of Prey Program at the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida. It has been one of the most beautiful projects I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of.

Here’s what I’ve learned thus far:

We spend so much of our lives trying to fill a void.
We’re afraid of silence.
Afraid of being alone.
Afraid of nothingness.

We’re especially afraid of not being enough for another person.

All these fears cause anxiety, sadness, and overwhelm.

So what do we do?
We fill our days with tasks.
We fill our days doing so that we don’t ever have to confront ourselves.

Working in and with nature causes you to be present, to observe, and to just be.
It really reminds you of who you are at your core.
To go with the flow and trust that you’re okay.
That you’re enough.

Balancing being and doing.
That’s really where the magic is.

Find ways which you can add more silence and more nature into your life.
Go out into the world and see how you can help the world through your passions and your interests.
