Interview with Lizzy Colley: Owner of Bananas and a Connoisseur of Cute

Olivia here reporting from Providence! Today I bring you Lizzy. She is the proud owner of Bananas, one of Providence’s newest boutiques. Located on Broadway, a.k.a. the West Side, one of Providence’s coolest neighborhoods (do people say cool anymore?!).

Ladies and Gents, Lizzy Colley!

where are you from and where do you live now?

I am originally from Corpus Christi, Texas. I now live in Providence! I’ve been here for 8 years.

describe Providence:

Providence is wonderful. I feel like anything goes here. You can dress how you want to dress, do what you want to do without any hesitation. It’s such a diverse city, and there is so much to do, and eat of course! I also love how close everything is to Providence. New York City is 3 hours away, Boston 45 minutes, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire in a couple of hours- everything is so close!

what is one thing you can’t leave your house without?

I can’t leave the house without lip balm and an emergency phone charger. I hate chapped lips and my phone is always dying!

Us gals here at winter moon live our lives by inspiration, tell us, who or what inspires you?

My family inspires me to be a successful person. Being from Texas, I am so far away. I like knowing that I make them proud, and I am so grateful for everything they have done for me in my life.

what is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

My Dad is an amazing, strange, wonderful Texan man. He has always marched to the beat of his own drum, and he honestly doesn’t care about what anyone has ever thought about him. He’s always just done his own thing and I’ve definitely followed suit. That’s why I’ve always felt confident in who I am, what my interests are, and what I’m doing.

if you could only wear one piece of clothing from your collection, what would it be?

That’s tough! I’d have to say my vintage mexican wedding dress. It’s the most comfortable, colorful, lightweight, beautifully embroidered piece of clothing I own!

when did you start collecting clothes?

I started really collecting when I started working for Second TIme Around. I was around clothing all day every day, and we were taking in new merchandise every hour! It was very hard to control myself from purchasing clothes, I barely had a paycheck each week!

how would you describe your style?

fun, random and cute!

when did you develop your sense of fashion and style?

Early high school! That’s when I really started to get into clothing, fashion and expressing myself through the way I dress!

who are your favorite designers?

Betsey Johnson, Meadham Kirchoff, Vivetta, Sretsis and Moschino

what is the best place you’ve ever traveled to?

Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, in Memphis, TN. The colorful rooms with shag carpet, velvet paintings and poodle wallpaper are amazing! The tackiness of the estate completely inspires me!

what’s the significance behind the name, Bananas?

They used to call my father Dr. Bananas in the 60’s and 70’s. I thought it would be fun to kind of name the store after that. Plus, I’m bananas for everything in it!

We love animals! do you have any pets?

I have two miniature schnauzers, Molly Mae and Candy. Molly is 6 years old, and Candy is our newest addition to the family, she is 3 months old! They are precious little creatures and I’m completely in love with them!

what is your favorite thing about social media?

Making new friends! I have made so many awesome friends from all over the world through instagram, Facebook and tumblr.

Lastly, any words of advice to anyone trying to start a business?

Make sure you do your research, and be prepared to fail. It sounds negative, but it’s true. Go into it knowing and accepting the fact that you might not succeed, but you will do whatever it takes to make it work. Confidence is good, but you have to be humble. Also, you have to practice patience, which can be hard! Success takes time, and great things don’t happen overnight!

Bananas is a store that you MUST check out! Lizzy carries the cutest clothes, jewelry, shoes, bags, and I could go on. If you’re not in the area then you can definitely buy things on her website and make sure to follow her accounts on instagram for your daily dose of cute! @theconnoisseurofcute and @shopatbananas

It’s great to see someone so young dive into the world of fashion and business with so much enthusiasm. Winter Moon wishes you the utmost success!
